Here are some helpful tips for parents whose children are entering Primary 1 next year:
1. Familiarize with the School Environment: Visit the school with your child before the school term starts to help them become comfortable with their new environment. Knowing where the classrooms, toilets, and canteen are can reduce anxiety. Grab the chance to show your child when you have to prepare textbooks as well as school uniforms!
2. Establish a Routine: Start establishing a daily routine that includes consistent wake-up and bedtimes, meal schedules, and study periods. This helps children adapt to the structure of the school day. Spend some time sharing about the possible experiences, as well as feelings with the child. This will definitely help to pace them!
3. Encourage Independence: Teach your child basic self-care skills such as dressing, eating independently, and managing their belongings. This builds confidence and helps them cope with school expectations. Start with encouraging them to make payments at the supermarket, or food centres.
4. Share Amazing Experiences about School: Talk positively about school and the exciting new experiences they will have. Share stories about your own school days to build excitement.
5. Practice Social Skills: Arrange playdates or group activities to help your child develop social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperating with others.
10. Stay Patient and Supportive: Transitioning to Primary 1 can be challenging for both children and parents. Be patient, offer support, and celebrate small achievements to build your child's confidence and resilience. Of course, don’t forget that there are people around you who have similar experiences. Chat with them!
We offer a series of workshops and classes under our ITOTA programme that aims to strengthen children’s social skills. The activities work to expose them to better expression, understand how to protect themselves, and many more.
